El Campello is an old fishing village that has grown into a lively Spanish small town with approx. 30,000 inhabitants.
From Alicante it only takes 20 minutes by tram or the lemon express as it was called before and this has made El Campello a pleasant suburb of Alicante. Although El Campello is a small town, there are all conceivable services in the old town such as post office, railway station, modern medical station with emergency admission, sports hall, police station and nice parks with green well-kept lawns. There is even a tourist office where they speak English.
There is a busy fishing fleet here that offers fresh fish daily. Every evening when the fishermen come in with their fish, fish auctions are held and the marina with its old fishing boats is at one end of the long promenade. The fish restaurants located after the promenade serve fresh fish every day and there are many delicacies on the menus.
Along the palm-lined promenade with all its shops, cafes and restaurants, and nowadays you are not allowed to build higher than four storeys, which has resulted in a pleasant and calm atmosphere with the low-rise buildings in the foreground and the bluish barren mountains in the background.
In the harbor there is a tower that was built by Berber pirates and warned with smoke signals when the enemies approached. In Campello they have the traditional fiesta "Moors and Christians" (moros y cristianos) where they stage various battles, where Moors fight against Christians. Boats with imaginary enemies approaching the coast from outside and attacking the inhabitants on the beach. Riders on horseback fight with shields and lances against the enemy, and the people of Campello go out of their houses to support the Christians in the fight against the barbarian invaders. A medieval market is also held during the same week.
Alicante airport is three miles away and can be reached both via nice small roads and the motorway.
